Interesting things to know about plants and fruits

Since the dawn of mankind, humans have been exploring nature for shelter and food. Studying and coming across millions of different species of plants and herbs or edibles they provide. Experimentation from the very beginning was key to understand the nature of the plant and its effects on human life and health. Some findings and uses of plants, fruits, and vegetables date back centuries, way before the digital age we live in. Without any modern developments and trace of digital technology, at the time the only solution was to consume and hope for the best, whether in taste or medical health advantages. In doing so, most certainly many medical solutions and deficiencies were overcome by such findings, herbal treatments became more common and effective alongside exploring new species of plants, fruits, and vegetables that became a common part of human diet and has continued to do so till date.


Statistic Study:  In terms of general categorization, around 400,000 species of plants and 2000 different types of fruits are known to science. It is also believed that around 15 million different species of plants currently live on our planet and this shows we still have a long way to go if we are to uncover the full potential of what nature has to offer and how we can benefit from it.

More than half the species recognized by science are said to be edible and advantageous to human beings along with the 2000 different types of fruits. These types of foods are now becoming one of the most important parts of our lives and as science progresses each decade, we unfold many other possibilities and health advantages these fruits and plants have to offer such as essential nutrients, etc.


VEGETARIAN: A Whole New Term: While highlighting the importance and demand of green food, we cannot ignore the vegetarian movement, their stance, and the consequent increase in the demand for green food such as plants, fruits, and vegetables. Entire communities have started relying on just greens as their entire diet with active studies being carried out around the globe to understand the effects of such intake and how to cover every essential nutrient a body needs within the limitations of eating only green. 


Various Types of Plants and Fruits Used Around the Globe: Talking about entire species of only edible plants and fruits would require quite a long series of books. Here we shall look into a few types of plants and fruits, under a broad spectrum, that has recently emerged as a very likely addition in this category. Research equivalent of decades of work and experimentations are now being done in a matter of hours with the technological advancements. This enables us to categorize the plants and fruits according to their characteristics, DNA, use, advantages, nutrients count, and many other factors.


Mangosteen, also known as purple mangosteen is a fruit with no definite origin, but it is found in the tropical lands of southeast Asia such as Columbia, Florida, Porto-Rico, etc. that lie in the surrounding of the Indian Ocean. This fruit is extracted from a tree, when fully ripe it has a sweet, tangy flavor and smell to it with a deep reddish color and juicy flesh like the interior of citrus fruit. It has gained much popularity for its unique taste and smell and is referred to as the queen of fruits. Unfortunately, Mangosteens are native to the tropics of Southeast Asia and do not grow well anywhere else. This fruit is also used in Chinese food therapy. Different components of the plant are used in the making of traditional medicines and it is also utilized in the making of natural dyes. 


Opuntia also known as prickly pear or tuna fruit are from the family of flowering cactus, its major characteristics include it being edible. These are native to north and south America. Prickly pears can be further categorized based on their physical and chemical properties. Varying from shrubs to entire trees these cacti are famous and recognizable through their flower and fruit, a red berry, that grows over a wide flat circular pad called cladodes. These fruits are enjoyed by the native animals and birds and humans alike. Mostly found in Mexico and the Mediterranean regions. These are rich in nutrients and used in various types of foods, utilized as vegan leather, animal fodder, biofuel, and bioplastic, and in folk medicine for their Phytochemical properties.


Lastly, the Persimmon also known as the kaki fruit has a large variety of species that come from different trees produced in different areas. With so many species and varieties in their properties, not all of these have been explored. The most common has a tomato-like appearance with a leathery exterior and a soft brown interior. Different species are used for different purposes ranging from making tea to vinegar. It is full of nutrients and phytochemicals and is utilized in ripe and unripe forms.
